What is Leather Patina?

Put simply, leather patina is the process of aging on leather. Every leather is unique with natural features and characters. They age beautifully with time and eventually develop their own unique patina, a gorgeous vintage finish that leather develops as it ages. Natural leather patina develops with age, the sun, natural body oils and the environment. It is a natural chemical process. Just like an older wine is, the more tertiary flavours it will have.

Which leather is best for showing patina?

Natural vegetable-tanned full grain leather in particular develops the best patina over time. This is because it absorbs the world’s elements over time, be that movement, sunlight, heat or the natural oils that your body produces. Full grain leather is the highest grade of leather and of the absolute best quality. It is considered the most durable and robust form of leather as it is made from the strongest part of the animal skin. In addition to this durability, it is often recognised for its attractive quality due to the close grain pattern. Totally undoctored, unlike split leather, it retains the natural markings of the cow. This is why, when it is also naturally rather than chemically tanned, it develops the perfect patina. All of this contributes to creating a characterful leather.

Pueblo Leather, Buttero Leather, Vachetta Leather, Waxy Leather  are also good choices for showing patina. They also are Vegetable Tanned Leaher.  They can be scratched by impact or the touch to begin is slightly rough on your hands, but even if untreated over the years, the surface will become silky smooth through a natural patina change.

We use different kinds of tools for this, from paint brushes, cloth to sponges to create the water stains and the patina effect on the Veg-tan leather. Imagine a painter does for a painting with his enthusiasm by mixing different colours with his palette, and applies a transparent coating to the leather product.
